IHD Network

Our History

In March of 1996, a group of men and women of faith, led by Dr. Edem Agamah, a Ghanaian-born hematologist/oncologist, gathered in Springfield. Illinois, USA, to form a medical missions organization called International Health and Development Network (IHDN). A branch was established in Ghana and registered as an NGO in the same year.

The IHDN seeks to develop sustainable Primary Health Care (PHC) programs in small towns and villages in developing countries, using the earthly Health Care Ministry of Jesus Christ as the model. This effort involves helping people improve upon their physical, social, economic, educational, and spiritual well-being and pointing them to the kingdom of God. IHDN also assists in the total development of the communities they serve.

Since 1996, IHDN has successfully undertaken projects and programs for the benefit of the people of Ketu (North and South) and Keta Districts and surrounding areas in the southeastern part of Ghana.

IHDN MISSION HOSPITAL, now EP Church International Mission Hospital, first started clinical work under a mango tree Agbozume in 1996 and later opened a clinic called IHDN Family Health Clinic in the living room of the late Mr. Benjamin Agamah. Dr. Ransford Sefenu was the first medical officer hired for the clinic in 1998.

Dr. Sefenu promoted training and community health education through health broadcasts using the village public address system. He was able to raise awareness on malaria, hypertension, and diabetes. As of 2002, the clinic was treating over 5,000 patients each year. However, when the Sogakope Hospital was completed in January 2003, Dr. Sepenu was recruited, so the IHDN Family Health Clinic closed down.

Despite the closure of the clinic. Dr. Agamah still came to Ghana annually with medical teams. He went to the several villages from where patients, who previously attended the clinic before it closed down, came from. He held clinics in village classrooms. He was moved by the depth of poverty and plight of the communities. After praying and sharing with his family and friends, Dr. Agamah and his wife, June, committed to pursuing a bigger faith journey. They decided to use their personal savings to advance the work of IHDN in Ghana. In 2006 they acquired 23.5 acres of land at Weta-Adzadokpo, 3 miles from Agbozume, which they donated to IHDN to construct an ultra-modern medical facility.

Within two years, an Out-Patient Department (OPD) of IHDN Mission Hospital comprising 6 consulting rooms, a treatment room, an emergency ward, a surgical theater, a recovery ward, a laboratory, a designated X-ray room, administrative offices, guest apartments, and a conference room laboratory was completed at the cost of $850,000 and commissioned on June 14, 2008. In January 2018, the laboratory needed more space, so the X-ray room was converted to additional laboratory space.

As most of the patients were very ill and traveled from several miles away, an inpatient department (IPD) was needed. Accordingly, a 60-bed ward to help provide better care to the patients was built at a cost of $700,000. This was completed and commissioned on July 20, 2013. The addition of maternity wards in 2016 increased the bed capacity to 80.

IHDN Mission Hospital, now known as E. P. Church International Mission Hospital, membership with CHAG in 2016 was later withdrawn in 2017. However, having satisfied all relevant membership requirements, it was reinstated in 2024 and has been in good standing since.

The hospital provides medical and surgical care to over 30,000 clients yearly. The hospital serves a catchment area of over 120,000 people in the Anlo, Keta, & Ketu Municipalities and adjourning communities.

Short Term Mission Trips

Since 1996, IHDN USA has sponsored short-term medical and surgical mission trips to Ghana with qualified doctors in the USA. IHDN Mission Hospital is a preferred selective destination for medical students from the USA.

IHDN mission volunteers have offered Continuing Professional Development (CPD) lectures at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Ho Regional Hospital. In 2017, IHDN started a biannual CPD program at the IHDN Mission Hospital to help share new knowledge and expertise with Ghanaian doctors, nurses, and medical students.

Research/Medical Curriculum

IHDN Mission Hospital has conducted a cross-sectional survey into hypertension awareness and prevalence in the sub-region. This is ongoing research to help us understand the disease and how to manage the health of people in the southeastern part of the country.

Medical & Dental Outreach

IHDN is committed to community outreach. Accordingly, we have gone into schools and offered medical and dental care to students and teachers in junior high & senior high schools in the Ketu (North & South) Districts. In addition, medical outreach clinics were held in several communities and villages, including Nogokpo, Taskorner, Weta, Agbozume, Lotakor, Kpedzakope, Keta, Vume-Bator and Worgbato.
